BRONZE ROMANESQUE OPENWORK STRAP-END: LION PASSANT. CIRCA AD 1100-1200

BRONZE ROMANESQUE OPENWORK STRAP-END: LION PASSANT. CIRCA AD 1100-1200

£195.00

A beautiful bronze strap end or mount dating to the Medieval period, c. 1100-1200. The main body of the mount is decorated in Romanesque style, consisting a moulded three-dimensional representation of a lion passant regardant - facing left with its tail curling back over its body. A high level of detail is visible on this element, namely the closely spaced annulets clustered around the head which presumably are supposed to represent the lion's mane. Spaced unevenly around the lion are a series of eight circular apertures which create an openwork effect. A museum quality medieval artefact in excellent condition with an even green patina. Found by metal detectorist in Devon.

Dimensions: 31 mm x 12 mm.
